It is a term we all know and hear often, over-looked and dismissed as 'so yesterday'! Antioxidants are our dynamic defense mechanism to neutralize free radicals, therefore reducing cellular damage. Antioxidants are your first layer of defense against harmful environmental effects, and we are bathed in them daily!

Antioxidants are essential skin protectants

At the very heart of each product I formulate is ingredient synergy, offering cumulative benefits. LUCA | Lipid-Ferment Fullerene + C Serum has been formulated to offer 'network antioxidants' this phrase means antioxidants that work cooperatively to strengthen the effectiveness of each other.

The Super Antioxidant Trifecta - Network Antioxidants Fullerene, Vitamin C and E - working cooperatively to strengthen the effectiveness of each other.

Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Fullerene each have antioxidant properties, antioxidants have the capacity to fight free radicals. Some common free radical triggers are:
  • Ultraviolet and visible irradiation
  • Pro-oxidant air pollutants: ozone & ionizing irradiation
  • Environmental aggressors 
  • Cigarette smoke / toxins
Reactive oxygen species (ROS)—are a subset of free radicals that contain oxygen and are considered to be a cause of skin aging as well as various skin concerns such as age-spots, wrinkles, roughness, noticeable pores, acne, and the loss of elasticity.
Antioxidants slow the signs of aging—the development of wrinkles and fine lines and improve overall skin health, offering protection by preventing new wrinkles from forming.

Vitamin C

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate is a stable oil soluble Vitamin C ester, its fatty acid components increase the ability to penetration the skin-3 times more deeply and less irritating compared to L-Ascorbic acid (LLA). Studies have shown that Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate can promote up to 50% more collagen production than LLA. 

Vitamin C can provide photoprotection—this is a molecular process that helps protect the skin from UV rays, synergistically along with Vitamin E boosts the photoprotection effect by a factor of 4. 

Vitamin E 

The vitamin E group of antioxidants consists of two different main types – tocopherols and tocotrienols, with a total of eight analogues: α-, β-, γ-, δ-tocopherols and α-, β-, γ-, δ-tocotrienols. Alpha-tocopherol is the most biologically active form, while gamma-tocopherol has the highest antioxidant activity.

Studies show that topical application of vitamin Eis more effective than oral intake in order to increase its concentration on skin. Vitamin E offers skin moisturizing properties and works as a defence providing:

  • Protection against UV-induced effects to skin
  • Prevent the formation of wrinkles by blocking free radical damage
  • Reduce wrinkles by boosting collagen production
  • Support new skin cell growth
  • Speed up cell regeneration and reduce skin inflammation

I have included two different sources to further strengthen and boost the bioavailability of Vitamin Efrom rice lipids along with natural plant sourced mixed tocopherols Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta tocopherol. Finally Vitamin E has the ability to regulate Vitamin A in the body, which itself is important for healthy skin.

FULLERENE

Fullerene is a low molecular weight substance—with a spherical structure and nanoparticles about 0.7 nm in size, about the same as vitamin E and C molecules. 

The antioxidant strength of fullerene—because of its suppression of ROS generation is 250 times that of vitamin C. 
The antioxidant effects are maintained for at least 11 hours—If fullerene is administered topically in the morning, protective antioxidant properties lasts until the evening. 
Fullerene retains its antioxidative activity—Even under ultraviolet radiation. 
The fullerene incorporated into the formulation of LUCA—are created from sustainable natural materials Japanese Cedar, and are dispersed in squalene. 

SAFETY FIRST

HPLC analysis Has shown that fullerenes/squalane penetrated the epidermis through the stratum corneum but could not reach the dermis because it could not penetrate the basement membrane. Fullerenes with a spherical structure are expressed as nanoparticles about 0.7 nm in size, about the same as vitamin E and C molecules 

Fullerenes have great potential as skin antioxidants and well-aging agents that exert a stable antioxidant effect with an extremely long life compared to other antioxidants such as L-Ascorbic acid
