GURU bian stone gua sha

Provenance & Sourcing

Sustainably Sourced Provenance - Shandong and Henan Provinces of China, responsible sourcing practices involve ensuring that the extraction does not harm ecosystems, local communities, or wildlife, and that the workers are treated fairly. Bian Stone is a type of stone that holds both historical and cultural significance in ancient China.

Bian Stone was formed during the Cretaceous period - Around 65 million years ago, when a meteorite impact occurred in what is now the Shandong Province of China. The intense heat and pressure generated by the impact fused together various minerals present in the surrounding rocks, forming Bian Stone. This theory is supported by the presence of minerals commonly found in meteorites, such as nickel and iron, in some specimens of Bian Stone.

Chinese Medical Texts

Ancient Times

The use of Bian stone is mentioned in ancient Chinese medical texts - For example the “Huangdi Neijing” (Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon) and the “Shennong Ben Cao Jing” (Shennong’s Herbal Classic). These texts describe the stone’s healing properties and its application in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used for medicinal and spiritual practices. .

In ancient China - The Bian stone was highly regarded for its anecdotal healing properties to cure diseases, alleviate pain, and improve overall well-being. Made into pointed shapes and used for heating, massage, and what’s now known as Gua Sha, Bian stone was also used for puncturing leading to the therapy of acupuncture.

NATURAL INTELLIGENCE

HOLISTIC RESULTS

Bian Stone is a naturally occurring composite material - Consisting of
crystallites of calcite and graphite at both the micrometre scale and nanometre scale, and pyrite and anatase at the micrometre scale.

FAR INFRARED - Vertical far infrared emittance up to 0.923 in the 8-14 μm spectral zone- Bian Stone due to its excellent thermal emission capability is capable of:
+ Channelling meridians
+ Stimulating blood activity
+ Dissipating blood stasis
+ Regulating blood circulation in the human body

THERMAL EMISSION - The porosity [being full of tiny holes] is the most important factor that affects the thermal performance of the stone. The compact structure is comprised of microcrystalline calcites being identical in size, closely compacted and arranged with each other that almost no pores, cracks or fissures can be observed between crystal grains. This compact structure is one of the important factors that can enhance heat absorbing and storing capability and decrease heat dissipation in cooling of the rock.

ELECTRIC AND THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY - Graphite shows excellent electric and thermal conductivity, its thermal electric conductivity is 100 times that of ordinary non-metallic minerals. Graphite in Bian Stone occurs as fine particles of nanometer scale and is scattered in the interstices around microcrystalline calcite particles. The universal occurrence of graphite nanocrystals in Bian Stone enhance the thermal conductivity and thermal storage capability of calcite.

SEMI-CONDUCTOR - Pyrite is a paramagnetic semiconductor mineral, its electric conductivity originates from electronic center (n-type) or cavity center (p-type), since electrons captured due to heat influence tend to flow in an orientated manner to form electron flow, which result in thermo-electromotive force and lead to thermoelectricity of pyrite. Pyrite occurs as fine particles generally of micrometer scale to nanometer scale, being scattered in interstices around microcrystalline calcite particles in Bian Stone, which enhances the thermoelectric performance of calcite.

PHOTOELECTRIC - Anatase is one of the three varieties of TiO2 occurring in nature and is a semiconductor mineral. As TiO2 oxide nanomaterials are capable of absorbing infrared and microwave rays, a material with addition of TiO2 nanoparticles can effectively absorb infrared radiation and enhance the heat preserving performance of the material. TiO2 is also characterized by high photoelectric transformation efficiency, therefore, TiO2 is utilized as a photoelectric transformation material in Bian Stone.
UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES

+ Gua Sha targets energy flow and blood circulation -
A light to medium pressure releases fascial and muscular tension and it aids in the movement of sluggish lymph fluid to tone the face.

GUA SHA IS NOT MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (MLD)
+ Lymphatic Drainage - Is a different modality and technique from Gua Sha, that utilises a very light touch with the focus being on the lymph fluid and the movement of it. Pumping and light gliding strokes, in specific regions of the body/face, to encourage the drainage down towards the heart, or towards the lymphatic ducts, depending on the body area being drained.
+ Gua Sha - Applying light pressure with gliding strokes, targeting the muscles and fascia layer using friction to improve blood and fluid circulation.
+ Stimulation of Acupuncture Points - Medium pressure can be applied directly to specific acupuncture points on the scalp and face which in turn benefits the Zang-Fu organs.
+ Gentle Friction - Promotes increased blood flow to the scalp/skin, both of which are necessary for healthy and strong hair/skin and helps lift away dead skin.

PAIN DOWN REGULATION
+ Gua Sha is used to manage muscle pain - Neurophysiology explains that because it upregulates a specific substance (referred to as HO1) in the body that has both been shown to have anti-nociceptive (neurophysiological term for pain relief) and anti-inflammatory actions.
+ The stimulation of Circulation - Can aid decrease inflammation and boost detoxification, which can lead to a clearer complexion and promote the movement of lymph fluid.

Each Gua Sha is unique, featuring naturally occurring marbling, that may appear as pale lines or patches. This is perfectly normal and is due to the organic nature of the Bian Stone.

It is not a comb don't try use it as one! Think of it more of a scalp massage, once I got to grips with how to use it - I became obsessed! My scalp is clear of flakes (I use it with the cleanser ZUCI) my scalp and hair are so happy. Thank you Gabrielle.
